It&amp;rsquo;s Insurance Fraud Awareness Week in Minnesota, but that&amp;rsquo;s nothing to celebrate. Insurance fraud hurts us all, even though we hardly notice the pain. Every time we pay an insurance bill, we&amp;rsquo;re handing over money that will find it&amp;rsquo;s way into the pockets of people who abuse the system.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
While many insurance bills break down the premium so you can see the cost of the coverages you&amp;rsquo;ve purchased, they don&amp;rsquo;t break out the cost of fraud. It&amp;rsquo;s imbedded in your premiums. If it was a separate line item, you would be outraged.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
How big is the problem?&amp;nbsp; $80 Billion nationally. That number doesn&amp;rsquo;t mean much until it&amp;rsquo;s put in perspective. One way of looking at it is to compare it to the cost of shoplifting. We all know we pay more at the store because retailers invisibly pass on their shoplifting losses to consumers in the form of higher prices. So do insurance companies, but the cost to the public for insurance fraud is&amp;nbsp; about 6 times higher than the cost of shoplifting. It works out to an average of about $1000 per year for each US family. Even if your insurance needs and costs are low, remember the cost of insurance fraud is imbedded in the prices of everything you purchase because the providers of all goods and services price their insurance costs into what you pay.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Why aren&amp;rsquo;t the jails full if it&amp;rsquo;s such a big problem? While some professional criminals do get busted, much of the cost come from normally law biding folks who abuse the system in ways they don&amp;rsquo;t even think of as crimes. Padding a claim or fibbing a bit on applications for insurance is where much of the cost to insurers happens and this cost ultimately gets shared by everyone in society.&lt;br /&gt;

Overheated dryers are a common source of house fires and obviously can spread far beyond the laundry room.&amp;nbsp; Lint is often the culprit, so the lint filter is your friend, provided you clean it out after every load.&amp;nbsp; It&amp;rsquo;s also a good idea to never leave the house with the dryer running.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The hoses that bring water to your washer are also a potential trouble spot.&amp;nbsp; They sometimes burst and when that happens, water will run until someone discovers it.&amp;nbsp; Things could be floating before the discovery if the problem occurs while you are on vacation.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The risk of a hose failing increases with age.&amp;nbsp; Experts recommend replacing them every 3 to 5 years, even if they look fine.&amp;nbsp; Buying the cheapest hoses increases the risk.&amp;nbsp; Braided stainless steel hoses or high quality reinforced rubber hoses are your best bet, but even the best hoses can fail.&lt;br /&gt;

What benefits are available under Workers&amp;rsquo; Compensation?&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Workers&amp;rsquo; Compensation Benefits are available to employees who are unable to work because of a work related accident or illness.&amp;nbsp; The injured employee will be indemnified for lost wages as a result of the work related injury if he/she is medically authorized off from work.&amp;nbsp; Typically, lost time benefits are a percentage of the injured employee&amp;rsquo;s pre-injury wage.&amp;nbsp; In addition to all medical expenses related to the treatment, rehabilitation is also typically covered.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;b&gt;What is a waiting period?&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;It is the period from the date of the injury to when the workers&amp;rsquo; compensation benefits start accruing.&amp;nbsp; The waiting period may be paid retroactively as determined by your states designated retroactive period.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
In the tri-state area, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Iowa all have three day waiting periods.&amp;nbsp; There is a difference, though, in how the three days are applied in each state.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;ul&gt;
    &lt;li&gt;Minnesota:&amp;nbsp; Includes the date of injury plus two days = Friday injury means employee must return to work by Monday or it would become a loss of time claim.&lt;/li&gt;

    Wisconsin:&amp;nbsp; Excludes date of injury and Sundays&amp;nbsp;= Friday injury means employee must return to work by Tuesday or it&amp;rsquo;s a loss of time claim.&lt;/li&gt;
    &lt;li&gt;Iowa:&amp;nbsp; Excludes date of injury and last day worked = Friday injury means the employee must return to work by Wednesday or it is a loss of time injury.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;/ul&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;What is the disability date for occupation disease?&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The date of injury is set by the first time an employee loses time due to the injury or disability.&amp;nbsp; This time may be paid or unpaid.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;b&gt;What is an IME?&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;An Independent Medical Exam (IME) is a medical exam of the injured worker by a medical professional other than the treating doctor who conducted the original examination of the injured worker.&amp;nbsp; The insurance company or employers are entitled to an IME to challenge the treating physician&amp;rsquo;s diagnosis, the recommended treatment plan, or whether the injury is work related.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;b&gt;What happens if parties have a dispute that cannot be resolved?&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

Suppose a guest drinks too many alcoholic beverages and causes a serious accident while driving home. The victim(s) might not only sue your guest for his or her careless driving, but could also come after you for enabling the person to become impaired.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Or, what if food that you serve gets someone, or worse yet, EVERYONE sick? Maybe it sat out too long. Maybe your hands weren&amp;rsquo;t clean when you prepared it. Maybe you just happened to buy some contaminated ingredients. It doesn&amp;rsquo;t matter how the people get sick, you might end up at the top of some attorney&amp;rsquo;s list if this becomes a serious matter.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Maybe the action on the field spills over into your living room. People have been known to get rowdy at Super Bowl parties. Furniture can fall victim to exuberant guests reenacting something that just happened in the game. Failing to hide any footballs you might own could result in red wine on your white carpet. &lt;br /&gt;

The good news is your homeowners insurance covers incidents like these. The bad news is your deductible will probably mean you recover little or nothing on damage to your property. And it&amp;rsquo;s never good news if you become a defendant in some type of legal matter.&lt;br /&gt;

Applying the letter grade system to your work comp experience modification factor is an easy way to understand where you are at.&amp;nbsp; A 1.00 experience mod is the average mod for companies in your industry.&amp;nbsp; A 1.00 mod is a &amp;ldquo;C&amp;rdquo; letter grade &amp;ndash; average, right in the middle.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
A mod higher than 1.00 is leading towards a &amp;ldquo;D&amp;rdquo; or even an &amp;ldquo;F&amp;rdquo; as a letter grade.&amp;nbsp; Debit mods, like a 1.25 or 1.50, cost your firm more money.&amp;nbsp; There are definitely things you can do to improve your mod.&amp;nbsp; (See &amp;ldquo;Eleven Ways to Improve Your Mod.&amp;rdquo;)&lt;br /&gt;

If you are thinking about implementing a wellness plan in your company, we encourage you to take a holistic approach.&amp;nbsp; Although physical well-being is of utmost importance, true well-being doesn&amp;rsquo;t occur until other needs are met as well. Although Abraham Maslow&amp;rsquo;s &lt;span style="text-decoration: underline;"&gt;Hierarchy of Needs&lt;/span&gt; was developed over 70 years ago, human development has not changed significantly since then to warrant a substantial rewrite!&amp;nbsp; We still need to have our basic needs met before we can develop to our greatest potential.&amp;nbsp; At WA Insurance Group, we encourage employers to include these five elements in their wellness program, Career, Social, Financial, Physical and Community.&amp;nbsp; &lt;/p&gt;

Packing a survival kit for your vehicle doesn't take much effort and could make a life saving difference.&amp;nbsp; Start by packing things to help stay warm such as extra clothes and blankets.&amp;nbsp; Even newspapers will provide insulation to help hold in body heat if you get stranded in your car.&amp;nbsp; Also pack some food such as energy bars.&amp;nbsp; Bottled water is likely to freeze and expand if kept in your car all the time, but it might still be useful.&amp;nbsp; Better to take some along each time you venture out.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
A flashlight and extra batteries will come in handy.&amp;nbsp; Booster cables and a small shovel may help you get back on the road.&amp;nbsp; Don't forget a scraper and winshield washer fluid.&amp;nbsp; Not having those can lead to problems even in decent winter weather.&amp;nbsp; And don't leave home without your cell phone.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
If you get stranded in&amp;nbsp;a blizzard in a&amp;nbsp;rural area, it's probably best to stay in your car.&amp;nbsp; Visibility can reduce to almost nothing and it's easy to get lost when you can't see anything.&amp;nbsp; It's wise to fill up the gas tank more frequently in winter. Even a quarter tank can keep you warm for a long time if the engine is run just 10 minutes per hour.&amp;nbsp; And that shovel should be used to keep the exhaust pipe clear of snow or carbon monoxide could be a problem.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;

Do you think your organization pays too much for auto insurance?&amp;nbsp; If you are like most business owners, your answer to that question is a resounding "yes!"&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;There are four variables that affect the premium of a commercial auto policy.&amp;nbsp; By understanding these variables, you should be able to properly classify your vehicles, thereby achieving the lowest possible premium that an insurance company can offer.&amp;nbsp; If your policy contains mistakes in any of these four areas, your pricing will be affected, and your premium could be substantially higher than it should be.&amp;nbsp; If an insurance underwriter has any doubt, they will always use the more expensive classification.&amp;nbsp; This misinformation is not in the best interest of the business owner.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="margin-right: 0px;" dir="ltr"&gt;The first variable in determining the premium for a commercial vehicle is to classify its "use" from the following categories:&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;ol&gt;
    &lt;li&gt;Retail Use - most expensive&lt;/li&gt;
    &lt;li&gt;Commercial Use - moderately expensive&lt;/li&gt;
    &lt;li&gt;Service Use - least expensive&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;/ol&gt;
&lt;p style="margin-right: 0px;" dir="ltr"&gt;Given the nature of the classification system, it is important that you work with your broker to determine if any of your company's vehicles can be moved to a lower classification.&amp;nbsp; If the insurance company's underwriter is uncertain about a vehicle's use, they will use the old adage "when in doubt, use the higher rate."&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The second variable in determining auto premium is the location in which the vehicle is garaged.&amp;nbsp; Garaging location is defined as "the place where the vehicle usually stays each night," which is not necessarily the location of the company's main office.&amp;nbsp; The insurance industry has divided states into territories and developed rates for each territory.&amp;nbsp; The state of Minnesota, for example, has 19 different territories, resulting in 19 different rates for garaging locations.&amp;nbsp; More populated areas will drive premiums higher.&amp;nbsp; I recommend that you review the garaging location for each vehicle annually to make sure that you are achieving the lowest possible rate.&lt;br /&gt;
&amp;nbsp;&lt;br /&gt;
The third variable used to determine auto premium is the radius of operation for each vehicle.&amp;nbsp; This determines the distance surcharge for each auto.&amp;nbsp; The surcharge classifications are: Local, Intermediate, and Long Distance.&amp;nbsp; The more local a vehicle's usage is, the lower the premium; the longer the distance a vehicle travels, the higher the surcharge will be.&amp;nbsp; To avoid unnecessary surcharges, make sure that your vehicles are being properly classified according to the distance they travel.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The final variable determining auto premium is the gross vehicle weight, which is the manufacturer's capacity rating.&amp;nbsp; The heavier the vehicle, the more damage it can cause, and the higher the surcharge will be.&amp;nbsp; Heavier vehicles are also more costly to repair.&amp;nbsp; There are four weight distributions for trucks and two distributions for truck-tractors.&amp;nbsp; It is very important that your broker correctly identify the weight classification for each of your vehicles.&lt;/p&gt;

Workers who are planning to take time off during the holidays are generally doing their best to get ahead of their workload.&amp;nbsp; Unless your organization is unusually busy during the weeks closest to major holidays, you are well-advised to lighten up on the demands you make of your already-stressed-out workers.&amp;nbsp; It will help to create the kind of culture where people want to stay and help encourage staff retention.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Before you hang the stockings at work, here are a few suggestions to make it a more pleasant holiday season:&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;ul&gt;
    &lt;li&gt;If you have any gift exchanges at your workplace, keep the dollar limit to a minimum.&lt;/li&gt;
    &lt;li&gt;Consider surveying employees to determine whether they would rather have a company party, gift certificate, or cash payment in the amount you budgeted for your holiday party.&lt;/li&gt;
    &lt;li&gt;If you have a party, encourage casual dress so employees won't have the extra expense of purchasing special clothing.&lt;/li&gt;
    &lt;li&gt;Encourage your employees to volunteer or participate in a company-sponsored fund-raising event such as Salvation Army, Toys for Tots, or gift tree.&amp;nbsp; Helping others will not only boost their morale, but it will also boost your brand in the community.&lt;/li&gt;
    &lt;li&gt;If you have one, distribute your company policy or guidelines on holiday decorations and music well in advance.&lt;/li&gt;
    &lt;li&gt;If you have an employee assistance program, make your staff aware of it through payroll stuffers or posters.&lt;/li&gt;
    &lt;li&gt;Be sensitive to people who don't wish to participate in holiday events for religious or personal reasons.&amp;nbsp; Make sure everyone understands holiday events are voluntary.&lt;/li&gt;

If that&amp;rsquo;s you and you are relying on your homeowners insurance to cover property and liability losses, chances are you could be in for a costly disappointment. Homeowner&amp;rsquo;s policies were created for the purpose of covering risks associated with a residence situation and provide very little automatic coverage for occupational and business risks. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Typically, there is a modest amount of insurance on work or business related property in your home, but it would be rare to find a policy with more than $2,500 coverage. There is usually no liability coverage for business related situations, so if a customer or delivery person falls on your steps and sues you; you are on your own. &amp;nbsp;Another nasty provision found in most homeowners policies says that outbuildings used in a business aren&amp;rsquo;t covered, so if your garage is part of your business operation, it&amp;rsquo;s probably not covered. And if an employee is hurt on the job, there is no work comp coverage under a home policy.&lt;br /&gt;

Based on their answers, business owners and CEOs are looking for solutions that focus on issues relating to both business risk and strategic risk.&amp;nbsp; These are issues that, if they aren&amp;rsquo;t costing the businesses money already, will be costing them money in the very near future.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
We recommend that business owners and CEOs work with an agent or broker who can help them identify and prioritize all of their risk issues.&amp;nbsp; There are agents and brokers in the industry who can help businesses address both business risk and strategic risk issues.&amp;nbsp; The first step in this process is an assessment to identify the top five business risks the business owner or CEO will likely face in the next 18 to 24 months.&amp;nbsp; Then the agent or broker can create a comprehensive plan to systematically address these issues.&amp;nbsp; There is absolutely no doubt that this type of approach will increase profits for a business.&amp;nbsp; &lt;br /&gt;

The notice could have a significant impact on work places.&amp;nbsp; There are seven actions listed that employers will want to pay attention to.&amp;nbsp; The notice gives examples of possible actions employers and unions may take that are grounds for charges of unfair labor practices.&amp;nbsp; The poster states:&lt;br /&gt;

    &lt;li&gt;Strike and picket, depending on the purpose or means of the strike or the picketing. &lt;/li&gt;

Of course, there will be an investigation.&lt;br /&gt;

Next, we see an interview with a distraught tenant who lost everything and didn&amp;rsquo;t have any renters insurance. The news crew never has to look very hard to find this person because generally at least 2/3 of the residents didn&amp;rsquo;t carry any personal property coverage. Many had thought about getting it but had just put it off.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
What we don&amp;rsquo;t see is the hardship these victims have to deal with in the weeks and months that follow from the financial setback caused by the fire. People tend to underestimate the value of their possessions until they go about replacing them. We also don&amp;rsquo;t see the reaction of the victims when they eventually learn how inexpensive it would have been to have had insurance to cover their loss.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Renters insurance is surprisingly inexpensive. A $20,000 policy typically costs in the range of $100 to $125 per year in our area. &amp;nbsp;People who have car insurance might find an even lower cost because some insurance companies offer a multi policy discount. In such cases, the discount also applies to the car insurance!&amp;nbsp; We&amp;rsquo;ve actually seen cases where the reduction in the auto insurance premium was enough to pay for the renters policy.&lt;br /&gt;

Another way to begin the process of educating employees is to provide a &lt;b&gt;benefits statement&lt;/b&gt;. &amp;nbsp;It lists all benefits provided to employees and has separate columns to show employer and employee contributions, which highlights the significant contributions many employers make.&amp;nbsp; Many companies refer to this information as &amp;ldquo;your hidden paycheck.&amp;rdquo;&amp;nbsp; Your insurance agent or benefits carrier may be able to assist you in developing a benefits statement.&amp;nbsp; &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Employees with a greater understanding and appreciation of their workplace benefits are likely to have improved job satisfaction resulting in feelings of loyalty toward their employers.&amp;nbsp;Some ways to create more knowledgeable employees are through benefits surveys, benefits statements, and employee meetings during open enrollment.&amp;nbsp; Partner with your agent to plan and execute these steps toward improved employee satisfaction.&lt;br /&gt;

Most policies don&amp;rsquo;t differentiate between on campus and off campus housing.&lt;br /&gt;

But we want to stress that policy language isn&amp;rsquo;t universal from one insurance company to the next when it comes to property of students. It&amp;rsquo;s also a topic that needs to be revisited if a student&amp;rsquo;s situation deviates from the above &amp;ldquo;traditional&amp;rdquo; model.&amp;nbsp; For example, most policies wouldn&amp;rsquo;t cover a part time student or a student who decides to take a semester off and live somewhere other than the parent&amp;rsquo;s home.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Age limits appear in some policies. This can mean a separate renter&amp;rsquo;s insurance policy would be needed for a grad student or older undergrads. Property of students can be a murky area so it&amp;rsquo;s wise to check back frequently with your agent and when there is any doubt; an inexpensive, separate renter&amp;rsquo;s insurance policy is the best solution.&lt;br /&gt;

Homes are typically insured based on their replacement value, not market value.&amp;nbsp; Even before the big decline in home values, there was generally a gap between the typical home&amp;rsquo;s replacement value and market value.&amp;nbsp; That gap has widened.&amp;nbsp; This seems to be causing some people to consider reducing their insurance as a way of reducing their premium.&amp;nbsp; This probably isn&amp;rsquo;t a good idea.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
First, it may be difficult to get the insurance company to agree to this.&amp;nbsp; Since most &amp;nbsp;policies promise to pay on a replacement cost basis, insurers don&amp;rsquo;t feel they get enough revenue to keep that promise unless the premium is also based on replacement cost.&amp;nbsp; It may be difficult to find an insurance company willing to insure a home based on its market value if that value is way below the replacement value.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Even if you find a willing insurance company, you could be in for an unpleasant experience at claim time.&amp;nbsp; The policy might pay on a depreciated basis or have a penalty provision that reduces your payment in proportion to how far below replacement value your coverage was.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
How do you know the replacement value of your home?&amp;nbsp; Most insurance agents have calculators that are pretty accurate at estimating this, based on the size and features of your home.&amp;nbsp; The replacement value may be shocking compared to your market value, but a worse shock is to hear that your claim will only be partially covered because you insured based on the wrong value.&lt;br /&gt;

Most companies believe things will average out over time and &amp;nbsp;are willing to absorb a big chunk of&amp;nbsp; the losses themselves as they await a return to better days.&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: tahoma;"&gt;In essence, the major change will be that the threshold of the dollar amount of loss that is split between the frequency and severity point is increasing.&amp;nbsp; The threshold has been at $5,000.&amp;nbsp; NCCI will be moving the threshold to $15,000 over a three-year transition period.&amp;nbsp; These changes will be filed in the third quarter of 2011.&amp;nbsp; The changes will be adopted by NCCI states and will roll out to the marketplace late 2012 and early 2013.&amp;nbsp; At this point, the implications of how it will impact specific companies are not completely known.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: tahoma;"&gt;The split point of losses at the $5,000 threshold has been in place as long as I can remember.&amp;nbsp; Losses under $5,000 are considered primary losses.&amp;nbsp; Primary losses are an indication of frequency.&amp;nbsp; Losses over $5,000 are excess losses.&amp;nbsp; Excess losses are an indication of severity.&amp;nbsp; With the threshold changing to $15,000, more losses will be considered primary losses and will indicate a frequency issue.&amp;nbsp; One implication of this change could be that mods will be increasing as a result of the frequency issue.&amp;nbsp; NCCI will be making other changes to help offset the threshold change.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: tahoma;"&gt;Here are three recommendations in light of this change:&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;ol&gt;
    &lt;li&gt;
    &lt;p style="margin: 9pt -9.35pt 0pt 0.25in;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: tahoma;"&gt;Employers need to reduce their number of workers&amp;rsquo; compensation losses.&amp;nbsp; Executing safety policies and implementing good hiring practices can help reduce the number of losses&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
    &lt;/li&gt;
    &lt;li&gt;
    &lt;p style="margin: 9pt -9.35pt 0pt 0.25in;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: tahoma;"&gt;It will remain very important to control losses so they remain medical only claims.&amp;nbsp; Implementation of a return-to-work program is the key.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
    &lt;/li&gt;
    &lt;li&gt;
    &lt;p style="margin: 9pt -9.35pt 0pt 0.25in;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: tahoma;"&gt;Companies that bid projects with an experience mod currently of slightly under 1.00 to slightly over 1.00 will need to pay greater attention to claims in the next 12-24 months.&amp;nbsp; More and more entities are requiring experience mods under 1.00 before they can bid on a particular project.&amp;nbsp; Controls need to be put in place so that your losses don&amp;rsquo;t take you out of the bid process.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

Leasing companies typically require you to carry more liability insurance than just the minimum amount your state requires. They also limit the size of your deductible. Really large deductibles are usually forbidden in leases.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: tahoma;"&gt;People who lease should consider lease gap insurance. This coverage can save the day if you total out the car and collect less for it than your lease pay-off amount. This can be a real problem early in your lease when depreciation usually devalues the car at a faster rate than your pay-off amount is decreasing. Lease gap coverage pays the difference between the pay-off amount and what you were paid based on the car&amp;rsquo;s value at the time of the loss. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: tahoma;"&gt;You can buy lease gap coverage as part of your regular auto policy. Leasing companies usually offer this, too and roll the cost into your monthly payment. You should compare costs before you buy. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: tahoma;"&gt;When McKinsey explained to survey respondents that employees could purchase their insurance at a low cost through state-run Exchanges, 30% indicated they would definitely or probably stop offering employer-sponsored insurance (ESI), while over 63% said they were either undecided or would not make the change.&amp;nbsp; Interestingly enough, well over 50% of those surveyed said they hadn&amp;rsquo;t calculated how many of their employees would benefit from such an arrangement and only a little over half said they were &amp;ldquo;somewhat familiar&amp;rdquo; with health care reform.&amp;nbsp; At best, McKinsey was getting educated guesses from decision-makers who are not familiar with health care reform and its impact on their employees and financials.&amp;nbsp; &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: tahoma;"&gt;Nancy-Ann DeParle, Assistant to the President and Deputy Chief of Staff for the White House commented in her June 20&lt;sup&gt;th&lt;/sup&gt; blog post about this recent statement from McKinsey:&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: tahoma;"&gt;Whether you choose to side with the White House or McKinsey, at the end of the day what matters most is the level of satisfaction business owners and their employees have with benefits.&amp;nbsp; At issue are the &amp;ldquo;me too&amp;rdquo; companies who may emulate the decisions of others, prior to having a thorough understanding of their options.&amp;nbsp; &lt;br /&gt;

&lt;p&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: tahoma;"&gt;The insurance industry has discovered that when they look at large groups of people, credit score is a very reliable predictor of the amount of losses they are likely to pay. So it's common to see people with good credit scores rewarded with low rates and the opposite for people with low scores. Insurance companies have long believed that mature, stable, responsible people are the best auto insurance risks and regard credit score as a proxy for those qualities.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: tahoma;"&gt;Using credit score in car insurance rating has certainly been challenged for its fairness. When called upon to defend the practice, insurers typically respond that they can't look at any one individual and make accurate predictions about future claims, but they can look at groups with common characteristics and make very accurate predictions. That's why 16 year old drivers pay more than 50 year olds, even though there are some excellent 16 year old drivers and some lousy 50 year olds. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: tahoma;"&gt;Regulators of the insurance industry have generally accepted the practice, so fair or not,&amp;nbsp; that's how the system works. Our best advice is to pay attention to your credit score and work to make it as high as possible. Doing so will pay off in many ways. &lt;br /&gt;

&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: tahoma;"&gt;Many of us have the same attitude toward disability and disability insurance as the young invincibles do about health insurance.&amp;nbsp; We don&amp;rsquo;t think anything will happen to us.&amp;nbsp; According to research done by the Council for Disability Awareness, 64% of wage earners believe they have a 2% or less risk of being disabled for 3 months or more during their working career.&amp;nbsp; In reality, the Social Security Administration says the odds of experiencing a disability for a worker entering the workforce today are 3 out of 10, or closer to a 30% chance. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: tahoma;"&gt;To better understand how well-prepared you are, should you experience a loss due to an accident or illness, the Council for Disability Awareness has provided five questions every worker should ask:&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;ol style="margin-top: 0in; list-style-type: decimal;"&gt;
    &lt;li&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: tahoma;"&gt;What are my &amp;ldquo;necessary&amp;rdquo; monthly living expenses that would continue if my income stopped (e.g., rent or mortgage, utilities, food, medical insurance, etc.)?&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/li&gt;
    &lt;li&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: tahoma;"&gt;Would my personal savings pay for my &amp;ldquo;necessary&amp;rdquo; monthly expenses&amp;mdash;for one month, three months, 6 months, longer?&amp;nbsp; Would my savings cover my &amp;ldquo;out of pocket&amp;rdquo; medical expenses (deductibles and co-pays)?&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/li&gt;
    &lt;li&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: tahoma;"&gt;Does my employer have a sick pay plan or long-term disability program, or both?&amp;nbsp; Am I participating?&amp;nbsp; When would it start, how much would it pay me and for how long?&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/li&gt;
    &lt;li&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: tahoma;"&gt;What other sources of income might be available to help me pay for my expenses, and for how long?&amp;nbsp; My spouse, family, second mortgage, credit cards?&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/li&gt;
    &lt;li&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: tahoma;"&gt;Could I afford my medical COBRA premiums, and what would happen to the contributions to my 401k account?&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;/ol&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: tahoma;"&gt;In the absence of private disability insurance, wage earners will have to rely on the Social Security Disability Income program for assistance during a disability.&amp;nbsp; According to the Social Security Administration, 65% of initial SSDI claim applications were denied in 2009.&amp;nbsp; For those who received approval, the average monthly benefit paid was $1,065 per month, with over half receiving less than $1,000 per month.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: tahoma;"&gt;There are many risk reduction strategies available to business owners and individuals who want to protect what they have, in the event that they become disabled.&amp;nbsp; Of course, taking better care of one&amp;rsquo;s self is paramount.&amp;nbsp; In addition, there are many options including short and long-term disability plans as well as key person income replacement, overhead expense and even a disability buy-out plan.&amp;nbsp; &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;p&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: tahoma;"&gt;Although not scheduled to take effect until 2014, this voucher repeal significantly changes the employer responsibility provision under PPACA and should simplify employer strategies for implementation due to reduced administrative and compliance burdens.&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: tahoma;"&gt;Under PPACA, employees who were required to pay between 8% and 9.8% of their household adjusted gross income toward the cost of employer-sponsored health coverage would have been able to receive the employer&amp;rsquo;s contribution as a &amp;ldquo;voucher&amp;rdquo; they could use to purchase coverage through a state-based Health Insurance Exchange.&amp;nbsp; &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: tahoma;"&gt;Under the guidelines of the state-based Health Insurance Exchange, if the coverage purchased through the exchange cost more than the voucher, the employee would be required to pay the difference.&amp;nbsp; &lt;br /&gt;

&lt;p&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: tahoma;"&gt;I thought it was a powerful statement!&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: tahoma;"&gt;What have you been called to do?&amp;nbsp; What are the gifts you have been given?&amp;nbsp; What talents do you have?&amp;nbsp; What are the opportunities that are before you?&amp;nbsp; &lt;br /&gt;

&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: tahoma;"&gt;There is a great book called &amp;ldquo;Halftime&amp;rdquo; by Bob Buford.&amp;nbsp; He is a business man and very successful.&amp;nbsp; He got to his 40&amp;rsquo;s and he had accomplished many things.&amp;nbsp; And yet something was missing.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;He came to the realization that more stuff didn&amp;rsquo;t motivate him any longer.&amp;nbsp; There had to be something else&amp;hellip;&amp;hellip;&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;p style="text-align: left;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: tahoma;"&gt;You may be thinking &amp;ldquo;What difference would it make?&amp;nbsp; Isn&amp;rsquo;t the insurance all about the numbers and premiums?&amp;rdquo;&amp;nbsp; My answer to you would be: &amp;ldquo;&lt;span style="text-decoration: underline;"&gt;Absolutely not&lt;/span&gt;!&amp;rdquo;&amp;nbsp; Underwriters price for what they know and &lt;strong&gt;&lt;em&gt;what they don&amp;rsquo;t know&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/strong&gt; about your account.&amp;nbsp; What they know and what they don&amp;rsquo;t know drive the amount of premium that you have to pay.&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: tahoma;"&gt;So, if you go to market your renewal, and you are dealing with two or three brokers, what&amp;rsquo;s their story?&amp;nbsp; Who is presenting you the best to the marketplace?&amp;nbsp; Has any broker ever &lt;em&gt;&lt;strong&gt;shown you the information they send to the underwriter&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/em&gt;?&amp;nbsp; An agent&amp;rsquo;s goal should be to lower your Total Cost of Risk, thereby making you more attractive to the insurance marketplace and increasing your profits.&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: tahoma;"&gt;Even though the direct premiums are the smallest part of Total Cost of Risk, it is a very important part of the risk management process.&amp;nbsp; &lt;em&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Ask your agent what they&amp;rsquo;re presenting to the underwriters&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/em&gt;.&amp;nbsp; Ask your agent if what you&amp;rsquo;re doing, as it relates to risk management, and what&amp;nbsp;they're presenting, is getting you to your lowest band of pricing.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;</a10:content></item></channel></rss>
